Most companies hire for sales first

Go-to-market is the largest job family at four of the six: OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral and ElevenLabs. It peaks at ElevenLabs, where it takes 70% of all openings. Two companies break the pattern, however. On one side, xAI puts 58% of its roles into infrastructure and data, while on the other, Cohere leans on research, since 30% of its openings are in AI research and ML, the highest of the six. In both cases, these are companies still building the machine rather than selling it.
